Bristol Ivy and Reading Your Knitting

Tired of tick marks and spreadsheets of when to work what shaping when? Picked up a project after a few weeks (or months, or years) away, and have no idea where you are in the pattern? Being able to look at your needles and know at a glance what’s going on is one of the most empowering things a knitter can know. In this class, we’ll go over the basics of stitch construction and knitting comprehension so you can gain confidence in your work on the needles.

Materials Needed:

  • You’ll need smooth, non-haloed worsted weight yarn and appropriate needles.
  • Please bring any languishing projects that are waiting for you to figure out where you left off--we’ll use them as class examples.

Bristol Ivy and Blocking

Most knitting patterns will finish up by saying block to measurements. But what does that mean? And should you steam block? Wet block? What about blocking lace versus blocking cables, or texture, or stockinette? Should you block before seaming or after? We’ll talk about different options for different fiber, garment, and fabric types, and then get some hands-on experience with blocking different swatches and some finished items.

Materials and homework:

Students will be provided with a pattern for a lace swatch prior to class. Please bring that, worked in any yarn, and any project that you’d like to block. We’ll talk about your options!

This is a great class if you’re interested in designing, or just want to experiment with all the possibilities knitting has to offer! Must be comfortable with stitch patterns, and have a willingness to experiment and play.

In this class, we’ll discuss the mechanics of short rows, try out different short row techniques, and think about when and where to use them.
