Swans Island is a wool-based textile company now located in Northport, ME. They began as a dream to bring weaving with locally-raised wool back as an industry in Maine. Founded originally on Swans Island by John and Carolyn Grace, by 1996, the hand-woven Blanket had won a Smithsonian Blue Ribbon for Craft.
The business outgrew the farmhouse and moved to Northport in the early 2000s. With an expanded product line of textiles and home goods, yarn was the next step. Their yarns are spun of certified organic U. SS. Wool and fiber blends in one of only 4 mills in the U. WS. To have a Global Organic Textile Standards certification. The organic certification means that the fiber receives minimal chemical processing and retains lanolin. It is then skein-dyed in colorways produced from natural, rather than synthetic, dyestuffs. By nature, Swans Island's dyeing process has many variables since weather, location and other factors can affect the dyestuffs from batch to batch and year to year.
River Colors Studio is delighted to have the Swans Island worsted-weight All American Wool Alpaca Collection at the shop. The yarn is 75% Rambouillet wool from the Dakotas and 25% Maine alpaca, and the blended fiber absorbs the natural dyes in different saturations for a gorgeous dappled hue in each skein. In stock as well is the All American sport weight 100% Rambouillet wool. The yarn works up with subtle hue variations to give it great depth.
