About Alpacas

Alpacas are a domesticated branch of the camel family. Perhaps 6,000 years ago, people in the Andes began selectively breeding wild vicunas and the modern alpaca is the result.

Most of our luxury craft fiber comes from the huacaya type of alpaca. The deep, puffy fleece carries a distinctive crinkle in the fibers. The natural colors are white, light browns, coffee brown, gray, and black. The lighter-colored fleeces are more in demand because they can be more easily dyed to a wider color range, but the darker colors are also desirable for natural earth tone uses.

The finest fleeces come from young, year-old animals. A single fleece of good density and cleanliness can bring $400. Considering their cheap maintenance and a new fleece every 12 to 18 months, it is not surprising new herds are developing outside Peru.

Alpacas also make excellent pets! You can keep a pair of these calm, sociable creatures to trim your lawn and fill your yarn basket.
