This Minnesota company began by offering knitters delicious 100% alpaca sportweight yarn in a lovely range of colors. Later, they expanded their offerings to include additional weights, including a sumptuous worsted and cushy bulky. Now, they’ ve branched out into cottons, and are adding to an ever-growing pattern collection, too. Blue Sky Alpacas is one of our favorite yarns!

Long considered a luxury fiber, alpaca provides exceptional warmth while still feeling lightweight, because the fiber has a hollow core. At the same time, alpaca has less elasticity than wool, and it can be used to create garments with lovely drape. There are two types of alpaca; Suri alpaca have a long, silky hair and Huayaca have a denser, crimpier, more 'wool-like' hair. Blue Sky Alpacas offer yarns using both types of alpaca fiber.
Alpaca and alpaca blends are still their hallmark, but BSA now also produces a number of high-quality cotton yarns. Their handspun organic cotton is grown, harvested, and produced without any pesticides, herbicides, agro-chemicals or dyes. It' s handspun on drop spindles by a women's cooperative in Peru. This is a yarn you can really feel good about using. The dyed cotton yarns are organically grown, and then dyed in a glorious range of colors.
Looking to make an heirloom-quality baby blanket for an environmentally-conscious mom-to-be? Try one of Blue Sky Alpaca's organic cotton yarns. The alpaca sportweight will lend a lovely halo to your traditional fair-isle and stranded colorwork projects. Blue Sky Bulky -- a blend of merino and alpaca -- is one of our favorite yarns for quick and luxurious scarves and hats. Alpaca Silk will make a gorgeous knit or crocheted wrap for special-occasion wear. All the yarns boast an exquisite hand. A project created with Blue Sky Alpacas yarn will be as pleasurable in the creation as in its use!
Blue Sky Alpacas also provides excellent pattern support for their high-quality yarns. Patterns include designs for simple but sophisticated adult garments and delightful children's clothing. Of course, they have plenty of great patterns for accessories to keep you and your loved ones swathed in alpaca and warm all winter. Among their most popular projects are their patterns for super-cute toys, including huggable bears, bunnies, and even chickens!
